GCGS Greater Cincinnati Guitar Society
About

What happens at each meeting?

NOTE: The society is in a moderate hiatus until some restructuring is agreed upon and some funds are raised. Don't worry, we aren't going away for good, but we'll need some time to get things rolling on a regular basis again. Events haven't totally ceased, see below! If you find you are interested in expediting this process, please feel free to contact Robert Brown or Greg Reedy with your ideas and enthusiasm. We can use the extra hands in helping make a great guitar society for Cincinnati!

We're always open for ideas, but as a basic "template" we tend to start each meeting with a guitar performance of some kind, whether it be a member or guest presentation. Then after each performance we spend some time on workshop-like activites, such as sight-reading, short seminars on improving technique, etc. Of course, some of our meetings are more structured with a theme in mind and a member or two to take the lead. For the most part, our meetings will be ever evolving and we want to include member input as much as possible on what kinds of things we can offer to better our experience at every meeting.

If you have any questions, comments, or would like to make a suggestion for a future meeting, please contact Robert Brown or Greg Reedy

***GCGS Presents***   Christopher Wilke, baroque lute
Church of the Redeemer in Hyde Park (at the corner of Paxton and Erie), Saturday @ 7pm
Baroque Lute player Christopher Wilke will present a concert of masterworks from the 17th and 18th centuries. This will be a rare chance to hear J.S. Bach's Suite in G Minor performed on the original instrument as well as the "L'infidele" Sonata by Sylvius Leopold Weiss, the greatest and most prolific lute composer of all time. Also included will be an emotionally powerful work by an anonymous composer and the beautiful and technically complex Sonata in Eb Major by the last giant of the lute, Joachim Bernhard Hagen, written during the days of Haydn and Mozart.

See the concert poster here!

Mr. Wilke is an eclectic musician who concentrates on music for plucked strings, both modern and historical. As such, he plays electric and acoustic guitars, renaissance and baroque lutes, and theorbo. These fields of activity have naturally lead him to participate in such diverse areas of performance as contemporary music festivals, baroque operas, rock bands, and solo performances in North America and Europe.

His most recent CD release, "Charles Hurel: Theorbo Music" will soon to be released on the Centaur label. This recording, one of the few solo theorbo albums in the world, features the world debut recording of the complete solo music of the 17th-century French composer, Charles Hurel, performed on the 14-string instrument.

In addition to his work with traditional repertoire, Mr. Wilke is also a composer, having studied with Robert Denham and Angelo della Picca. Published works with Les Productions d'Oz of Quebec, Canada include "Emperor Romulus Augustus, His Serious Funk" and "Diatribe." He teaches music at Xavier University and the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Ohio and at Northern Kentucky University.

Pedrick-Hutson Duo
Old St. George Church - Library @ 7pm
Dave Pedrick and Jeremy Hutson are two very conscientious players that make you want to start your own duo. Three words: Tone, Timbre, Ensemble - make this duo sound as one. There were moments I could close my eyes and believe I was hearing one guitar; their sense of ensemble was that good. Pedrick and Hutson are very conscientious of where their individual parts lie in a duo piece, and have the ability to elide one into the other seemlessly. Thanks for putting Cincinnati on your tour, guys! ---- Learn more about Dave and Jeremy here !

SUMMER VACATION
Over the next few months, our society will be going under some important changes - all for the better. We are working to get the GCGS registered with the state as an official non-profit organization, as well as electing and defining specific roles for board members. All of this will help in bringing bigger and better things for upcoming meetings and special events. This is all good news, this is necessary because YOU have shown your enthusiasm for the Greater Cincinnati Guitar Society, and our mission for the greater Cincinnati area. All members will be notified via email of progress and any important matters. See you in a few months and THANK YOU!

5/12/02

**Members Concert**
We had a terrific assortment of solo pieces and experience levels for our Members Concert. It was great to see, and hear, lots of playing styles, guitars, and interpretations of some great guitar music. Kudos to all of the members who played their hearts out! CLICK HERE to get a look at who performed and what they played.

3/10/02
This meeting was more of the "Master Class" sort of thing. We decided to postpone the actual performances to April's meeting. Some of us obviously had things more under their fingers than others, but that's OK! We know we are in an environment where it's ok to trip and fall a few times.

3/5/02
****SPECIAL EVENT****
Concert with Matteo Mela at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Clifton.
WOW! Ok, anybody who missed this concert should eternally kick themselves. This guy was phenominal. His technique, though spectacular, was certainly unique... but MUSICALITY oozed out of this guy! He was so "at one" with his guitar and the music he played that describing it here almost sounds cheesy. Mr. Mela was worth WAY more than the measely $4.00 we charged for a 2-hour set (of course it was FREE to members), and a gorgeous sounding space to boot! Click this link to see his program Matteo Mela

February 10, 2002
We've begun to break the ice for some of you and get your feet wet by digging into some small ensemble music. For others, this is a great opportunity to collaborate with other players and keep our fingers moving. We guitar players always love getting a hold of new stuff, or even reading through some oldies but goodies. We now have a few duos, trios, and a quartet (?) in the works for a future performance at one of our meetings. We still have lots of music for anyone who missed out! Pieces in the works right now are some things by Brouwer, Scarlatti, and some other arrangements and early pieces.

January 13, 2002
Happy New Year! For this month's meeting we had a little more intimate gathering with some help from Chris Hubbard on good right-hand technique. For some at the meeting it was some new and eye-opening information, for others it was a nice refresher on some aspects often overlooked or taken for granted. Chris outlined some good methods and common sense for the new and seasoned player.

December 9, 2001
We hosted guitarist David Ferrara from Dayton, Ohio. He performed a spectacular program of familiar and not-so-familiar pieces comprising a VERY nice selection (kudos on programming!). Some of the highlights were the Aire Vasco by Antonio Jimenez Manjon, Danza Espanola #5 & #10 by Enrique Granados, and the Capricho Catalan by Isaac Albeniz. After the concert we took some time talking to our guest, then we closed with a sight-reading exercise in ensemble of some simple arrangements of Christmas tunes (since this was our only December meeting). Some pieces were more in "piano" score which added the challenge of picking a voice and staying with it, especially when voices were added or fell out!
