GCGS held its first meeting in December 2001 with the promise of fulfilling a perceived need in Cincinnati's rich cultural landscape by creating a focal point for guitarists within the greater Cincinnati area. Though GCGS was formed on classical guitar principals, the Society is open to all styles that represent the best of what guitar has to offer. Ideally GCGS grows to become that ultimate meeting post of guitar players from all backgrounds.

Cincinnati is lucky to be home to a great number of high-level guitarists within the greater Cincinnati region, and plenty of aficionados that make it seem like a worthy endeavor. However, due to difficulty in finding adequate meeting space over the past few years, and hits economically, the Society had experienced a brief lull. The good news is this has come to pass, and in late 2009 and early 2010 energy is growing again toward plugging something great back into Cincinnati's cultural grid.
